Rooflights and continuous rooflights
The contemporary experience of building for both social and industrial purpose abounds in examples of translucent constructions (rooflights) installations. Rooflights widely adopted in contemporary building sphere were brought about by a number of economic, production engineering and operational benefits. The rooflight performs several functions:
Use a rooflight as an element of natural smoke exhaust system brings many economy, technical and operational benefits to Investor.
First, rooflights have lesser weight in comparison to ventilators and flues (elements of the mechanical/ forced smoke exhaust system) and consequently has got bearing capacity lesser onto the bearing constructions of roof and building in whole. It helps to save Investor’s money even on the stage of the designing, when calculating building construction for the lesser bearing capacity.
Second, the average duration of rooflights mounting and term of natural smoke exhaust system realization is 1,5-3 times shorter – in comparison with the forced smoke exhaust system. It can save Investor’s money by this time during the process of building, since smaller expenses, labor coefficient, complexity and terms of implementation reduce total cost of works.
Third, the structure, arrangement and operating principle of a rooflight as an element of natural smoke exhaust system is much simpler in comparison with the forced smoke exhaust system equipment. It helps Investor with saving money in process of facility exploiting and equipment support manning.
And the basic point – as a rule there are several variants of the natural smoke exhaust systems realization for one facility, this helps with optimizing production engineering solutions within one or another project and carrying a considerable economy effect in. The natural smoke exhaust system’s cost (with rooflights applied) in most cases is cheaper than the forced smoke exhaust system (with ventilators, flues application). It will further help Investor with cutting down the expenses of the smoke exhaust system and reducing the budget of the development in whole, and also bringing additional operational advantages – rooflights used for natural lighting and ventilation.
Application of rooflights allows considerable expanding the possibilities in creation rational architectural and sequencing facility solutions, provides necessary level and uniformity of the lighting in the premises regardless of building sizes, walls and partitions arrangement.
As intensity of lateral light (as in window lighting) in the process of its penetration inside the premises decreases non-uniformly, natural lighting by means of rooflights is more efficient than by windows, because a rooflight illuminates working surface 5,5 times more than a window of the same size.
Natural illumination of premises by rooflights allows considerable saving electric power, especially when the insufficient natural light in the daytime is technologically compensated. In some cases Investor can easily put away the idea of artificial light sources (lamps, lighting fixtures etc.) installing, thereby save the power used for it.
Natural illumination brings productive working atmosphere, it more salutary for human eyes as it does not dazzle and is not so contrasty in comparison with artificial illumination.
Using rooflights for natural ventilation (airing) gives additional economic, technical and operational benefits to the Investor. Investor saves considerable amounts of money when the need for the power-intensive and bulky ventilating equipment disappears. Rooflights also does not require big expenses for the mounting, operation and servicing.
Rooflights can be divided into 2 basic types: 1. point rooflights 2. continuous rooflights
Point rooflights mostly are used (mounted) in cases when the architecture of a building does not demand special features in forms of translucent roof elements and ways of their opening. Continuous rooflights are usually mounted when there idea of getting the most of the natural daylight is the main task, or if there is an especial need for nonstandard form of the translucent constructions (in the shape of a pyramid, sphere, polygon etc.)
Rooflights can be mounted on all types of roofing, and with different biases of roof. |
